Press Release on the Grand Opening of the Main Engine Laboratory
at the Admiral Makarov State University of Maritime and Inland Shipping

The grand opening of the Main Engine Laboratory at the Admiral Makarov State University of Maritime and Inland Shipping (SUMIS) will take place on 25 September 2015. The laboratory has been equipped through sponsorship support from the university’s partner companies: Gazprom Marketing & Trading, Sovcomflot, Dynagas Ltd. (Greece) and Transas.

The opening ceremony will be attended by representatives of the maritime community, non-governmental organisations and media.

The new laboratory has been fitted with one of the world’s most advanced main engine simulators – Transas ERS 5000 TechSim. It is capable of modelling all the operations in the engine room of a modern vessel powered by tri-fuel (fuel oil, diesel oil and LNG) diesel electric or slow speed diesel power plant in all operating modes (free water, waves, ice conditions, speed alteration and emergency).

The simulator will be used by the cadets of the SUMIS Marine Engineering Faculty and complement their theoretical studies and sea-going practice. This training will enable SUMIS graduates to work on the most sophisticated merchant vessels such as LNG tankers, product and chemical tankers and offshore support vessels.

Since 2010 Gazprom Marketing & Trading, a subsidiary of PAO Gazprom, has helped with the creation of six sophisticated laboratories at the University (the Tanker Operations, High Voltage, Electric Motor and Main Engine laboratories and the Welding and Turning/Lathe classes) and assisted in organising sea-going practice for more than 220 cadets and full time employment for more than 60 graduates of the University with the world’s leading tanker shipping companies

The activities of Gazprom Marketing & Trading to overhaul the University’s academic facilities is linked to the increased production of liquefied natural gas, oil and petroleum products in Russia which requires highly qualified Russian officers and crews.

The grand opening of the Main Engine Laboratory will take place at 10am on 25 September 2015. Address: Admiral Makarov State University of Maritime and Inland Shipping, 9, 22nd Line, V.O.

Media accreditation: Natalia Mikheeva, 8-981-74-13-265.
